Transforming our image, building our brand : the education advantage
by Valerie J. Gross
Gross, a librarian and president of a library system, explains how public library staff, especially leaders, can use an approach that focuses on the power of language to shape others' perceptions about the value of the library, get more respect, and garner maximum funding. It consists of three pillars (self-directed education, research assistance and instruction, and instructive and enlightening experiences) and replaces typical library terms and phrases with more compelling and descriptive terminology that focuses on the educational role of libraries and how they are indispensable. She explains how and why the approach works, with examples from her library system; key terms and job titles to use; communication tips; partnerships with schools; internal steps; publications, correspondence, and presentations; strategic planning; and funding.
