Hintz will discuss best practices and professional standards in the disposition of collections, with a specific focus on ways to adapt these practices for public library staff. Description: This webinar will address common questions about reappraising and deaccessioning archives and manuscript collections, including how to undertake a systemic reappraisal of your institution’s holdings, when it is appropriate to deaccession collection material, and how institutions can dispose of deaccessioned collections responsibly.  It will consider reappraisal and deaccessioning as one part of a comprehensive collection management strategy.</p>

  • When it is appropriate to deaccession collection material
  • How institutions can dispose of deaccessioned collections responsibly

Presenter Bio: Carrie Hintz is the Head of Collection Services at Emory University's Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives & Rare Book Library where she oversees all technical services and collection management functions for the library. She currently serves as the co-chair of the Standards Committee of the Society of American Archivists, the body that maintains SAA’s Guidelines for Reappraisal and Deaccessioning, among other standards.</p>
