Introducing the Book as iPad App

Nicole Hennig will return this Friday, March 1, 1:00 p.m. Eastern, for a fresh look at how publishers are using the iPad platform to create a new kind of book. Not the straight text, you’ll read in a Kindle app, these books mix elements of film, videogames, and social media to create a new immersive experience for readers. Nicole’s webinar this past summer was a hit. Register for Introducing Books as iPad App, and:

See demos of fiction and nonfiction titles, including children’s books and graphic novels

Discuss the qualities of a delightful reading experience

Ask some questions about what these changes might mean for readers, libraries, and publishers

Spark ideas for creative programs and services that you can offer in your library related to iPad book apps.

Library as Instructional Leader

From 2009 to 2012, library and discipline faculty from Washington State Community and Technical Colleges (CTC) participated in a project involving over 40 faculty and about 2,000 students to document the impacts of library instruction on basic skills students. This presentation will cover how the project was implemented and what findings were produced. The following assumptions guided the project design.

Information literacy is an accepted learning outcome

The library can make a contribution to achieving information literacy

Achievement of information literacy needs to start in developmental education (pre-college programs)

Collaborative efforts by the library and developmental education is a viable way to achieve information literacy

Keys to Managing the Major Gifts Process: It’s All in the Execution

Major gifts–whether $1,000 or $100,000 or anything in between–still produce the lion’s share of a nonprofits philanthropic revenue. The key to a successful program to identify, inform, interest and involve major gift donors, is more than simply asking–as important as the solicitation is. This webinar will focus on the development of a disciplined approach to achieving consistently good results and exceeding your goal.

Takeaways:

Create a major gifts management plan

Build a team of major gifts partners–staff and volunteer

Learn to keep your eye on the ball–focus on the goal

Know the difference between lead and lag measures

Create a compelling scoreboard

Maintain a cadence of accountability

Does your library have Kindles, Nooks and iPads for loan or in-house use?

Do you have accessible e-readers available to customers who are print disabled?

Do you know the legal requirements to make your services accessible?

Ebooks present both opportunity and challenge as the dominant delivery is via electronic license, governed by contract law rather than by copyright law.

At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will:

Understand the difference between eBook content licenses and ownership

Be brought up to date on the latest legal issues, including the settlement agreement between the National Federation of the Blind and the Sacramento Pubic Library Authority

Learn how the Califa Library Group (http://www.califa.org/) has fared in buying (not just licensing) eBook content for use by its customers.

Tipping Sacred Cows: Kicking Bad Work Habits That Masquerade as Virtues

Overview
Unmasking Corporate "Virtues" Whose Importance We Take for Granted

You work hard to do the right thing: work well with others, treat them fairly, and never settle for mediocre work. But too often, virtues like collaboration, fairness and excellence are revered beyond question.

But when these virtues become "sacred cows" - ideas revered beyond reason - they lead to wasteful, career-limiting behaviors.

What You Will Learn
Instead of zealous pursuit of seemingly virtuous traits, leaders must appreciate the unintended consequences of their good intentions.

You will improve your ability to see when your own values and virtues, and the values and virtues of the people you lead, backfire. This webcast covers:

Developing practical strategies to know when and how you help your organization most by going it alone, instead of collaborating with others.
Learning how the instinctual drive for fairness leads to spite and sameness, and develop habits to overcome this naturally destructive tendency.
Expanding your notion of excellence to understand when high standards help, and when they hurt by leading to paralyzing perfectionism in yourself and others.
While attending this program is FREE, reservations are required.

READ MORE HERE

Learn to choose between a survey or focus group process

Responsive Web Design Bootcamp

In this hands-on webcast presented by Jonathan Stark, author of 'Building Android Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript' and 'Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript', you'll learn why it is no longer safe to assume that visitors to your website are sitting in front of large monitors equipped with a keyboard and mouse. As smartphones overtake the desktop as the primary portal to the Web - and as new device types and interaction models continue to emerge - designers need to adopt future-friendly strategies that support a full range of user contexts with a single codebase.

What will be covered?

The "One Web" philosophy and benefits

Mechanics of media queries

Code organization and best practices

Adding support for adaptive images

Fallback techniques for older browsers

Who is this webcast for?

This webcast is for web designers and developers who are interested in creating mobile web sites and web apps. A working familiarity with standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript would be very helpful but is not required.

Trends in Cataloging and Resource Description

Resource Description and Access (RDA), the new content standard for library cataloging, the replacement for Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, was released in 2010, but RDA has not been fully implemented by the Library Congress, and is only very slowly being adopted in other US libraries. Meanwhile, in May 2011, the Library of Congress announced its Bibliographic Framework Initiative (BIBFRAME), in part to find a replacement for the MARC format - although BIBFRAME is much more than simply a new format - it is a new foundation for bibliographic description, designed for our networked, digital age. This webinar will take a look at what is happening in resource description, building on the BIBFRAME report, "Bibliographic Framework as a Web of Data: Linked Data Model and Supporting Services", released by Library of Congress and Zepheira, in November 2012.

Strategic Planning Part 1: Cultivation & Organizational Development

Strategic planning should be a means not only to produce a strategy, but also to engage and cultivate stakeholders, develop leadership, and generate new energy, commitment and consensus around mission. Its primary product is not a written plan, but strategic thinking within the organization, which is achieved through a process of planning followed by a process of implementation. A well-conceived and managed planning process can be the most effective form of organizational development.

Takeaways:

What benefits to expect from an effective strategic planning process

How to approach and structure a strategic planning process

How to get broad buy-in in any organization

Tools to use for assessing your situation, engaging your constituencies, developing an effective plan, and implementing it

How to Fail at Social Media (and How to Get it Right)

Lots of experts will tell you how to succeed at social media, but very few will lay out a clear path to failure. In this webinar, you will learn what the most common points of failure are for libraries, and why libraries often aren't getting what they want out of this medium. You’ll also see real-world examples, both good and bad, and find out if your library is on its way to a social media shipwreck –and how you might be able to change course.

Laura Solomon is the author of two books on social media and libraries, and she has seen many libraries enter the social media waters with no idea of how to navigate.

At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will be able to:

Identify at least three errors libraries commonly make when setting up a social media account and how to correct them

Explain the most important part in writing a post for social media

List at least three mistakes libraries often make when creating social media posts and how to fix them

Taking Leadership Online: Developing Your Personal Social Media Voice

How should you navigate the personal and professional boundaries in the world of social media, and what does that mean for your leadership? How does the social media buzzword “transparency,” translate into “leadership?” In this webinar, we will consider how nonprofit executive directors and other staff use social media personally to further the mission of their organization and translate their leadership online.

Takeaways:

What is online leadership

How to translate traditional leadership into online leadership

Create your own personal social media playbook

WorldShare ILL for Georgia libraries

The WorldCat Resource Sharing interlibrary loan service your library receives either through the Georgia statewide OCLC Group Services contract or through your individual OCLC Services contract will be replaced by a new service, OCLC WorldShare Interlibrary Loan, in 2013.

GOLD public libraries are scheduled to transition to WorldShare Interlibrary Loan in March; academic and technical school libraries in July. The schedule has been planned with consideration for seasonal activity levels by library type. During this time, OCLC will hold training classes specifically for members of the GOLD group contract. Your training has been developed in this way to give you the opportunity to learn the new service with other interlibrary loan staff in your state.

Training will consist of three modules, including WorldShare Interlibrary Loan Getting Started, WorldShare Interlibrary Loan Borrowing and WorldShare Interlibrary Loan Lending.

ALL online classes (described below) will start at 10:00 am Eastern Time and will last approximately 2 hours

* Special libraries and school libraries can choose to migrate with the March/April 2013 or July/August 2013 groups.

>> REGISTER ONLINE

Live Online

Live online training is offered for library staff who would like to have hands-on experience with the new service while interacting with an OCLC trainer. During these sessions, trainers will lecture and walk through basic steps. Attendees may then try different aspects of the service through a simulation system. This option allows librarians to practice using WorldShare Interlibrary Loan features that they will encounter in the new service. This type of training corresponds to the scheduled dates listed above.

There are a number of things you can do to prepare for your use of the new WorldShare Interlibrary Loan service. More information is available at OCLC migration website.

Stay informed

Watch for updates from the Georgia Public Library Service staff regarding plans for migration to the new WorldShare Interlibrary Loan service, as well as training and support for Georgia libraries. As we move closer to your library's transition timeframe, the State Library and OCLC will provide details about training topics and dates that will give your staff the information they need to begin using the new service.

Questions?

If you have questions about this upcoming migration, please contact Alan Harkness (aharkness@georgialibraries.org) or Elaine Hardy (ehardy@georgialibraries.org) at the Georgia Public Library Service.

WorldShare ILL Lending for Georgia libraries

Engage! Teens, Art & Civic Participation: Creating Compelling Discussion through Art

http://www.programminglibrarian.org/online-learning/engage-part2.html#.UVXo5ldXr8o

The Engage! Teens, Art & Civic Participation webinar series will introduce a program model that targets young adults, using visual art as a springboard to civic engagement. Originally piloted in ten Illinois libraries in 2010, Engage! Teens, Art & Civic Participation is an activity- and discussion-based program model featuring a selection of curated and compelling images of American art.

During these three free webinars, participants will:

Hear from librarians who participated in the Engage! pilot program, who will share what worked and what didn’lt with teens.

Be introduced to a free PDF guide to the Engage! model, featuring detailed instructions on how to get started.

Learn how to formulate effective “looking questions” that will elicit participation and engagement with art and thematic content.

Learn how to select images that will illuminate relevant civic participation issues for teen discussion and learning.
