Our final webinar in the series will highlight innovative, technology-enabled collaborations between legal aid programs and public and public law libraries in their communities to connect people with legal information. Panelists from legal aid programs and libraries in several states will discuss why and how they forged these partnerships and how they work. We will also provide nuts and bolts resources to replicate these partnerships in other communities, and potential funding opportunities to seed them. We will also discuss opportunities for library involvement in project advisory groups and state commissions.

Scientific studies of the brain are providing powerful insights for designing and delivering presentations that grab the attention of the learner. Once you understand the key concepts of strong visual communication, you can get unstuck from the stale text-and-bullet format of presentation. You don’t need to be a designer to learn some simple tips and tricks that will punch up your presentations and wake up your audience.

Presented by: Betha Gutsche, program manager, WebJunction OCLC, and visual communications advocate.

Lois Lowry LIVE!

Lois Lowry’s breakthrough dystopian novel, The Giver has been read by millions of people around the world. It left many with lingering questions: What happened to Jonas and Gabriel? Is a perfect society possible? What does it mean to live a complete life? With Son, Lowry continues to wrestle with the idea of human freedom while completing the story of Jonas and the baby he rescued.

Son combines elements from the first three novels in her Giver Quartet—The Giver (1994 Newbery Medal winner), Gathering Blue, and Messenger—into a breathtaking, thought-provoking narrative that wrestles with ideas of human freedom and the bonds of love. Thrust again into the chilling world of The Giver, readers will meet an intriguing new heroine, fourteen-year-old Claire.

Join Lois Lowry to hear her speak about Son, the other books of The Giver Quartet, and to have a chance to ask her your questions live!

Common Core State Standards: Bringing Parents on Board

As schools across the country move toward implementing the Common Core State Standards, district officials face a major challenge: How do they make the new academic expectations understandable to parents? A number of national organizations, including the Council of the Great City Schools and the National Parent Teacher Association, have taken up that effort, publishing written materials and creating video and audio segments—in multiple languages—designed to explain the standards to parents, in clear, jargon-free terms.

Our webinar guests will talk about those efforts, describe common challenges that districts face in discussing the common core with parents, and explain how school systems can address parents’ fears and misgivings about the standards.

Presenters:

Denise Walston, director of mathematics, Council of the Great City Schools, Wash.

Leader as Coach: Create a Culture of Development -- Shape People-Positive Outcomes

A Series of Three Webinars presented by Lauren Burnett, President of the Center for Inner Quality

Harnessing people’s energy and effort is vital in today’s context of constant change. Our approach to others sets the tone for our organization as we lead by example. In turn, our employees, modeling our behavior and carrying the tone of our leadership, respond daily to co workers and customers and create a culture people want to or not want to work and “play” in.

Webinar # 1: Defining Culture of Development

Define Culture of Development and content of series and Leader as Coach.

Using coaching language in everyday conversation. Make note of your choice of words and accompanying non verbal communication that send a message.

What messages are you sending? How often do you question why people take your message differently than you intended? Explore words that are accountable and engage collaboration.

Webinar # 2:

Leader as Coach: Giving, Seeking and Receiving Feedback

Distinguish feedback from criticism.

Inventory your ability to give and accept feedback.

Learn three feedback formulas: to encourage positive behavior, to improve behavior and to proactively ask others for feedback on what you can do differently.

Explore tips on how to accept and give feedback.

Homework: conduct two sessions with buddy, co worker or staff -- one giving feedback to encourage positive behavior and one to either seek feedback on your performance or to improve the behavior of another.

Extreme Social Media Makeover: Nonprofit Edition!

During this life-changing session, we’ll not just talk, but actually DO a mind-blowing demonstration of at least 25 killer tools to get tons of online traffic and revenue for your nonprofit. They are virtually all quick and easy (they better be or there’s no way we’ll get through them all!) and free. See how to instantly transform your nonprofit into a powerhouse!
“Content is king!” That’s the key to success on the web today. To remain relevant, you must create dynamic, compelling content. This can not only drive far more online visitors your way, but entice them to do all kinds of things you want them to do: stay on your site, return to your site, donate and support you in other ways, and refer your organization to their friends and family – initiating exactly the sort of viral marketing that can exponentially expand your fundraising and other outreach efforts.

We’ll explore how to decide which content to create, how to create it (even without typing a single keystroke!), create eye-catching headlines, post your content to blogs, social media, and websites, tweet about it, Facebook, develop irresistible free offers, create landing pages for people to sign up for those offers, use search engines to drive boost traffic, launch campaigns to gain more leads and increase the quality of those leads, and much more! For each of the 25+ steps, we’ll discuss what to do, why to do it, and what tangible and intangible benefits you should expect. More importantly, for each step we’ll actually demo a cool tool enabling you to quickly, easily, and in most cases for free, implement that tool. Each tool may blow your mind. Altogether… well, you might want to wear a hat!

Takeaways:

Master the right language for:

Understand how social media can help them raise more money, drive more traffic, and produce other desirable outcomes

Identify specific social media tools to achieve these objectives

Know how they can implement and exploit each of these tools easily and without technical skills

Energize your base: Tips and tools to raise awareness and build support for library services

A webinar exploring ways to increase your community's awareness of library services and of how those services are changing lives.

We know that libraries are a good investment but with tight budgets, we need to energize our base – to take action to connect more strongly with community members, to find out what excites them, and to let them know how libraries are changing lives – one connection at a time. Our panel will explore three vehicles that can help you increase awareness of library services:

Library Videos – New videos from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that showcase work done in libraries which are transforming lives, by changing the way we connect.
Geek the Library – A community awareness campaign offered free to libraries to help strengthen community connections and library support.
Data Visualization – We collect lots of data. Learn how the Colorado State Library is helping local libraries use their data to tell a story about impact.

Presented by: Karen Perry, Senior Program Officer, Global Libraries, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Jennifer Pearson, Programs Manager, OCLC Community Relations; Jamie Hollier, Project Manager with PLA and Library Consultant; and Linda Hofschire, Research Analyst, Library Research Service, Colorado State Library.

Have you thought about taking technology training out of the library and into the community? Join our webinar on Wednesday, November 14 at 11 a.m. Pacific time to find out how the Poudre River Public Library District in Colorado created "Tech-a-la-Carte" to do just that.

Irene Romsa, manager of the Outreach Department for the Poudre River Public Library District, will provide an insider's tour of Tech-a-la-Carte.
Communicating Through Infographics

Have you noticed the growing trend of communicating through infographics?

Do you wonder where the data comes from and how to verify information displayed in visual form?

Would you rather read a 100 page report or look at a visual presentation that conveys the story in less than one minute?

Would you like to tell a compelling story about your library through the medium of infographics?

Visual representation of information has existed for hundreds of years in various forms and formats. Infographics (information graphics) represent the latest visual form to gain popularity. Telling an effective story through infographics requires accurate data, compelling design, and visualization tools.

During this one-hour webinar, we will discuss and demonstrate:

blogs and infographic search resources to find examples and track trends

differences between infographics, poster art, and data visualization

common data sources used in infographics (big data and local sources)

suggest library-specific data and statistics appropriate for visual presentation

visualization tools for experimentation

This webinar will be of interest to library staff at all levels and in all types of libraries who need to present information to customers, stakeholders, and management. Senior staff and directors responsible for board reporting are especially encouraged to attend.

Transforming Traditional Library Services: Text a Librarian – Ideas for Best Practices

The mobile revolution – the use of mobile devices to access information, communication, and entertainment networks and services from many locations – is one of the fastest, most pervasive technological revolutions in the history of humankind. The pace of change, the plethora of devices and new versions, the battle for operating system supremacy, and the app explosion have resulted in a dizzying matrix of problems, challenges, and opportunities for libraries and library workers.

Librarians are working hard and fast to determine what services and materials can be offered on mobile devices. With each new platform (web, mobile, etc), librarians need to be familiar with it and the types of services that can be offered on each platform. In reference services, we have moved from in-person to adding instant messaging, chat, and now mobile.

This one-hour seminar will provide attendees with a brief history of mobile reference services, options for mobile reference services, and best practices.

At the end of this one-hour webinar, the second of a four-part series, participants will:

• Understand how mobile reference services work

• Identify some of the software/vendors that supply mobile reference services

• Be familiar with the types of questions best answered via mobile reference

• Share best practices for mobile reference services

This webinar will be of interest to library staff on all levels from all types of libraries, especially public services and information technology library workers, as well as middle and senior management.

This is the second in a series of four webinars presented by Tom Peters and guest speakers.

Makerspaces: A New Wave of Library Service

Makerspaces are taking hold in the library world and they are spreading quickly, popping up in libraries of all types and sizes. Makerspaces give people a place to pursue their own interests in building things, using tools (physical or virtual) and connecting with one another. Libraries have expanded on traditional library services to provide DIY/craft/make services, setting up spaces within their buildings and within their communities that allow people to do anything from building model airplanes to 3-D printing to self-publishing novels.

Learn what makerspaces are and how they work from librarians who are on the cutting edge of this movement by attending our upcoming series of free webinars. Each webinar will feature a panel of staff, administration, and patrons from one of the libraries that have implemented a makerspace. They’ll talk about how their makerspace concept began, how it was designed and how it was implemented. You’ll learn about the maker movement in general, the role libraries are playing specifically, and get ideas about how you can get involved and start a makerspace in your library!
